I realise that, along with motivation, consistency, blogging frequency and a good haircut,
I have a major lack in spontaneity.

Which would make my blog super boring. Which would make me super boring. Which we.. are.

I spend hours writing posts, then deleting said posts, then rewriting them, lathering, rinsing, and repeating.

My blog isn't me. At all.

I LIKE TYPING IN ALL CAPS, WITH AN UNNECESSARY AMOUNT OF EXCLAMATION POINTS (!!!), and I am not proper at all. Not that.. my blog posts are proper or anything, but.. yeah. I also like to end sentences with "yeah."

There is absolutely NOTHING different about my blog. My photos are ordinary. I haven't got a unique sense of style. I don't have a nice layout or pretty graphics. Everything is just so boring and staged and shit.

If someone I knew in person read my blog, they wouldn't think it was mine. And my blog doesn't actually say much about me. Anyone who reads this wouldn't know that I play the guitar, have a collection of red dragons, am a huge Star Trek, Star Wars, and Sherlock (CAN YOU TELL BY THE TITLE!!) nerd, ∞, facts which basically make up The Essence of Julian.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that my blogging style is going to change HUGELY.

Consider this as Attempt #1 at turning thine blogeth into one that is more Julian.

James Jean in Ateneo

(I LOOK SO NERDY!)

I attended James Jean's talk in Ateneo on the 6th. I absolutely love his work and when I found out he was coming back here (I didn't go the first time), I went INSANE because I never thought I'd physically see his work, and I instantly bought Rebus and Rift. You can tell how excited I was from my uniform: I went straight to Ateneo from school! It was a fantastic experience. His talk was inspiring, insightful, funny, and overall, really engaging. There was a book signing afterwards, and he sketched on our books! My copy of Rift was a misprint (it was printed upside down), which I thought was really unfortunate, but James Jean was really cool that signed the cover upside down so it would match the contents. Also, I got to meet Valerie Chua! Her art is really amazing too. I still can't believe I met them both on the same day.

I had fun on New Year's Eve. We ate amazing food, watched movies, took ridiculous photos on our balcony, and ate even more amazing food. I also sprayed some temporary blue on my hair for me to "test the waters" before I actually dyed my hair blue. I'm really excited to experiment with different hair colours this year.

This is what I wore to our 2011 Christmas lunch. My blogging has been scarce, I know, but I was hoping that my super cool Marvel-themed apparel would distract you from the fact that it's the middle of January. I actually have two (or maybe even three) more entries that I intend to post within the week. All my photos will be pretty badly edited, though, because I only have Photoshop Elements on my new laptop. Also, my hair looks kind of horrible right now (and in my photos) since I'm trying to grow it long for the summer and for college (!!!).

Speaking of college, I've been accepted into two universities! The University of Asia & the Pacific, which I found out about halfway through December but forgot to mention in my previous post, and Ateneo de Manila University, my dream college! I even got my first choice course: Bachelor of Fine Arts in Information Design!

Awesome stuff have happened this early on in the year (I MET JAMES JEAN! But I'll save that for another post), and I hope they continue to happen, to me and to everyone.

2011 was crazy.

In January, there was Prom. During April and May, I went to review school and started applying to colleges. In July I attended Graphika Manila. I took the entrance exams for UP and UA&P in August, and the entrance exam of my local dream university, Ateneo de Manila University, in September. In October, I hosted the opening for our school fair dressed up as Thor. Yes, Thor. I also performed about five times with different bands for the fair's free show and concert. Then in November, right after our semestral break, I was bitten by a godforsaken mosquito and was sent to the hospital and the ICU for ten days (which partly explains my lengthy absence). In December, my band Clandustine passed the Ateneo High School fair Band Fest! And my dad bought me a MacBook Pro to (finally!) replace the old, old, old laptop he gave me.

But I know next year is going to be even crazier: James Jean is coming back to the Philippines and I am going to his book signing next week, the rest of the college results are coming out in a month, I'm graduating from high school on the 25th of March, I'm going to Spain in April, The Avengers is coming out on the fourth of May (AHH!) and I will be a college freshman in June! I'm also planning to dye my hair blue, my dream hair colour.

Plus, what's gotten me more excited about the coming year, though I don't believe in luck nor do I share the Chinese's beliefs, is that 2012 is the Year of the Dragon. 12 has always been my favourite number and I absolutely love dragons.

So with that I wish everyone a Happy New Year and a great 2012!

School has been extra time-consuming and tiring, I hardly noticed that it's been more than a month since I last posted on this blog. Anyway, because I'm in my school uniform 90% of the time and I am tired of it (it's a good thing I'm graduating in less than six months), I decided to make a set on Polyvore showing what my day-to-day "uniforms" would be like if I had a choice. I love achromatic clothes, because of their simplicity, versatility, and the certain class they have to them. But I think adding a colour accent makes the outfit even more interesting.

On another note, this is going to be my last post involving Polyvore, because I recently found out about and signed up on Svpply. It took me long enough, I know. It's cleaner and much more organized than Polyvore, and it's easier to navigate around the site. So, goodbye, Polyvore.

My mother and I went on a roadtrip last Saturday to (kind of) watch over my sister during her first overnight field trip. We went all the way out to Lucban, Quezon, which is about 3-4 hours away from Quezon City. We stayed at the same resort my sister and her class did. It was called Batis Aramin, and it was much nicer than I'd expected.
Outfit-wise, I was wearing two new purchases: a blue owl sweater from Forever 21 and a cute owl connector ring I found in Greenhills. I know I told myself to buy only achromatic or red clothes, but I couldn't help it with the sweater!

One of the things I'm pretty sure most high school seniors in the Philippines were anxious about (aside, of course, from not graduating or getting into a good/any college) was the University of the Philippines College Admission Test, or the UPCAT, which was given to thousands of applicants last weekend. We were told to wear something comfortable for the 4-hour long exam, so this is what I wore when I took the test last Sunday.

Also, UP's school colour is maroon, which is also the colour of my new Dr. Martens shoes!

My dad just came home from Japan, and he bought me my first pair of Dr. Martens (Cherry-red Smooth)! They are so comfortable, practical, and high-quality, and the colour is perfect. I am so excited to wear these with everything!

Last Saturday, I attended Graphika Manila, the design conference. I learned so much from different the speakers, who were graphic designers, illustrators, animators, directors, etc. It was a such fantastic experience, and I am definitely inviting my friends to go with me next time! Also, there was a raffle at the end of the conference. I wasn't expecting anything, but my name was called and I won a design awards book, as well as a one-year subscription to Adobo Magazine!

Graphika Manila

The poster for the design conference Graphika Manila has been floating around on Tumblr for quite some time, and it really caught my attention. I knew I needed to go because I hope to be a graphic designer one day. The tickets were a little expensive, but fortunately for (us) students, the tickets are a bit cheaper. The best part is, my mother was kind enough to buy me one last Thursday!

I got a haircut last Tuesday! I know it looks like I dressed up for some sort of event, but I'm just happy that I can finally see without my bangs getting in the way! We also stopped by Zara and I got two shirts. After that, something clicked in my head and I decided that I will only buy clothes that are black, white, grey, and red. I'm not going to throw away my clothes of other colours, though. I just feel like I need to build a signature look for myself, and my wardrobe is heavily achromatic and red anyway.

Hello! I've been really busy with school that I haven't dedicated enough time to post a photo of myself in nearly a month! I hope my magic posts haven't been too boring. Anyway, I changed some things on my blog, like removing the navbar. Collection Magic: TOGA A/W 11

I had some mixed reactions while going through the first few photos of TOGA's A/W 11 collection, because they were of looks I just couldn't see myself wearing. But for the sake of the killer shoes and the model's out-of-this-world hair, I continued and encountered these six looks. These I found to be more me, probably because they are achromatic, and the outfits are not too feminine yet not too masculine.

Collection Magic: mame A/W 11

After seeing the A/W 11 collection of the new-to-me label mame, I knew I had to post it on my blog. I really like the combination of dark blue and red, and how smooth the transition between the two colours was -- from entirely blue, to blue and red, to entirely red. I also like that most of the looks aren't too casual or too formal, so I believe they are quite versatile.

Not a lot has happened since I last posted on this blog two weeks ago: I filled out and submitted my first college application, I've been (re)watching Star Trek:Voyager with my dad and my sister, I started watching Adventure Time in order (best decision of my life), and school started, which means that a large fraction of the next ten months will be spent wearing a uniform. Yeah. Bummer.

In other news, I saw J.J. Abrams's Super 8 last night! I thought it was really good. Wearing leopard print with red is also really good.

Collection Magic: Verlaine AW 2011

I recently discovered the amazing label Verlaine while reading Zana Bayne's blog, and I must say that I didn't think a nearly-all-black collection could be this spectacular. The styling is just so sharp and sleek, and those two adjectives pretty much describe my favourite collections. Plus, it truly takes talent to turn black-on-black looks interesting and new.

I attended a party my friend Socorro (she calls it the "no-occasion party") arranged last Saturday. It was in a café called Mozu, which we had to ourselves (and our parents). I had lots of fun, especially since I hadn't been with good friends for quite a while. I got to meet new people too, which was nice! For most of the party, we got to catch up, talked about things we shared in common with the people we just met, etc. We also played some card games when people started leaving, which, I think, was a good way to wrap up the whole thing.

Every summer, my sister and I take music lessons at the UP College of Music. Last Saturday, I had my recital for classical guitar. The two pieces I played, the standards song When I Fall In Love and All I Ask of You from the Phantom of the Opera, are two songs I like very much, and I was excited when my teacher gave them to me. I didn't do the songs any justice because of the lack of practice, but hopefully next year I'll be awesome. After my recital, we had time to take some photos of me with my guitar because my sister still had lessons that hadn't started yet. So voilà! Also, my dad gave me these shoes that were way too small for him (he doesn't remember why he bought them in the first place), and are eighteen years old. That's almost three years older than me!

We went to Cebu for four days last week, and on our second day there we went out to see the city. We got to see Magellan's cross, which the explorer Ferdinand Magellan planted there in 1521. The cross was right outside the Basilica del Santo Niño. The place was PACKED. We didn't stay for the mass, but the group we were with decided they wanted some souvenirs. After that we went to the Crown Regency hotel, which, aside from being a hotel, was also where the Edge Coaster and the Skywalk Extreme were. I can handle just about any gravity-defying ride there is, but walking beside a building with no feeling of restraint (I think they purposely made it feel that way) was absolutely horrifying. But now I can say that I am an actual Skywalker!

Just some photos I took over the weekend when we stayed at the Holiday Inn in Clark. The hotel room got a lot of great sunlight, which is really rare in our city (maybe it's all the pollution. Seriously.), so I used it to my advantage!

1. Exhibit A of the amazing sunlight. I was on ISO-100!
2. Another activity of mine while we were there -- drawing! Also, that small triangle-full thing I'm working on in the photo is now a big triangle-tree.
3. Goodbye, sunlight! Although, the sunset itself looked pretty spectacular, even through our dirty window (yes, I know, a hotel with dirty windows?!)
4. After dinner, our mom went to the doctor's lecture/symposium (that's why we were in the hotel in the first place), so my sister and I explored the hotel, watched some TV... then settled for jumping on our beds (while photographing and taking videos of us doing so).

Also, have you seen the film Youth In Revolt? After all the bed-jumping and ridiculous-photo-taking, we watched some more TV and came across the movie. I'm not particularly fond of movies with Michael Cera in it, but I found myself laughing my head off, and I was really drawn to his character's alter-ego, François Dillinger. That character was definitely different from the roles I've seen Michael Cera in. Also, the fashion in the film was too cute!

Oh my goodness, I've finally uploaded these! As you can see, these were from my photoshoot with my friends four months ago. I must admit, for about a month I was just too lazy to edit these, but I really enjoyed the process! I like how these turned out more than the other two mini-shoots we did on the same day, as I experimented more with the layout, colours, etc. and it actually looks like an editorial! When we went to the U.S. last October, we lived with one of my mother's cousins during our stay in Maryland. She and her husband had already been married, but they wanted a church wedding, so they scheduled one in April, in the Philippines. And just like the two previous weddings in the family, the colour they chose for the dress code was purple, or violet, or similar shades. Right after the wedding, a lot of photos were taken outside the church, and the place was quite nice! We then drove to the reception (with a few stops in between), and my sister and I had enough time to change into different outfits. The reception was full of flashing cameras, everybody running to be the subject of said flashing cameras, relatives getting together and catching up, and really great food.

I think if I showed myself this editorial about half a year ago, I would have hated it. Until recently, I couldn't stand the colour pink, especially not pink clothes. My everyday outfits would be completely achromatic, so I would just dress in blacks and grays. The spring trend that is colour blocking, though, has brought about a change of heart. Suddenly, I desired clothing that came in colours that were really bold. I really like how the looks in this editorial were styled, because the really bright pinks were paired with whites and creams, which provides quite an interesting contrast in the photos. Also, I can't help but be drawn to any editorial that features a model with any striking feature; in this case, her awesome pink hair.

The Graduation

My older sister graduated from high school almost a month ago! I can't believe it was almost a month ago. Aside from the graduation itself, which was WAY too long, I actually enjoyed the 27th of March. I got to see a lot of my friends from my sister's batch, dress up in the cutest outfit ever (and by cute I mean cherub-like) in which everyone though I looked like, well, a cherub and dinner with the family was great! I also got to buy a copy of The Arcade Fire's The Suburbs (finally!!) from Fully Booked. I doubt it was available in the Philippines when it came out, but because they won a Grammy, Fully Booked now sells their album.

Well, not really. I just got that title off of The Lonely Island's "I'm on a Boat." But I did go to a Nautical-/Floral-themed, or summer-themed, in general, party with some ex-classmates (I say "ex" since school ended last Friday) last night, in my friend Monica's house. I had fun! The evening consisted of us making fools of ourselves and photographing it all. It was also supposed to be a swimming party, but no one brought swimsuits/towels/extra clothes, so we didn't get to go swimming. But you can see the bathing suit I was wearing, which I got from the SM Department Store at a phenomenal price, underneath in the last photo.

Classes ended last Friday! And oh my god, what I'm going to do this summer!! My mother and I plan to buy loads and loads of fabric so we can have tailors make clothes just for us. We also plan on buying sewing machines so we can make our own stuff, too.

I'm going to make a list of really great pieces I want to have made, like that floral bottom, and other really feminine and bright-coloured stuff I find on the internet, because I need to move away from the predominantly black and grey outfits I used to wear all the time -- not that black and grey can't be feminine. My outfits were just so boring.

My summer officially starts in 4 days! I am so stoked! I can't wait to wear outfits similar to this one on a daily basis. What also excites me is the amount of colour I'm going to wear, as opposed to our boring school uniforms and dress codes for our civilian wear. It's funny how blush pink dominates this outfit, because I used to violently hate pink outfits. Maybe because my outfits were mostly achromatic. But I'm definitely, definitely wearing every colour (including pink) this summer and onwards!

When my sister and I were younger, our parents used to buy us endless encyclopedias. But the books would become outdated, so they opted to give them away. I never actually valued those old encyclopedias, but I now realize that I could have actually used them to make interesting items, like Dommie, the girl behind Dombot on Etsy does. The magnets in the photo above were made from old atlases, which I think was really creative!

Aside from the magnets, Dombot also offers great selection of cute and unique stationeries also made from old books.

That last one is just brilliant!

My dad, my sister and I went to UP (University of the Philippines) to explore the Mechanical Engineering college, where my dad went for college, and where my sister will go in June. We also brought our dog, Porthos, because he loves it in UP!

I really enjoy going through the photos on The Cobra Snake. The photos above are from the store, and as you can see, they sell pretty awesome stuff. They also have loads of pictures of really cool parties/events, which I want to show in another post, which explains the "part 1" in my title.

It's March, and I know I should be giving the Spring looks all my attention, but I can't help but fall in love whenever I see this Pre-Fall collection from Viktor & Rolf. Like I said on my Tumblr, these looks remind of the Desire character (my favourite) from Neil Gaiman's Sandman, and I just love everything about the mysterious, androgynous feel to the character. The collection's also so coherent and sharp, that I was honestly really impressed while browsing through the photos.

Necklush is a pretty creative accessory line I just discovered. It was made by two guys called Stephano Diaz and Troy Mattison Hicks. Their products are so artistic, fashionable, and useful (they can be scarves!). And I believe they're also handmade. Socorro, Dom, Chynna, Isabela (I just met her then!) and I had a photoshoot at Socorro's house two days before prom (will post look soon), and it was really fun. I was the "photographer", and I have most of our serious photos (which I will post when I've finally edited them!), but these are some of the outtakes and behind-the-scenes photos.

After, I changed into a Nautica shirt for dinner at Sambokojin. I was with my mother, Mari and Lito Balquiedra (part owner, I believe, of the restaurant), my sister, and Frederick Peralta, who designed my prom dress. The food was intensely good and so was the service! :)

So yesterday we had this thing called the "Social Graces Talk", in which we discussed how to eat, sit, walk, talk, and hell, breathe like a "lady" for prom, which is in less than two weeks. We were told to wear dresses and heels to the event, which was great as opposed to our dull uniforms. Haha!

I also took this opportunity to take photos with my friends.

What impresses me when I see collections by Erdem are the way prints are used, how amazing the prints themselves are, and the really, really specific details. This collection is really light and feminine and I can see people wearing these items to tea parties in the morning, but I can also imagine seeing these in classy dinners. This collection really is magic.

I went to my good friend Lian's place yesterday to do a project. We had loads of fun.

1. That's Lian. She's great.

2. Her bull-mastiff Noynoy (like the president!!) looks just like our dog Porthos (yes, that is a Facebook fanpage), so I went nuts.

3. She gave me some killer chocolate that had white chocolate on top, milk chocolate in the middle, and dark chocolate underneath. And those cookies? Heaven.

Disappointment & Pleasures

My mother, my sister and I went out to go shopping earlier today (I mean yesterday. I seem to have the habit of blogging way past my... bed time.). Exams are finally over, and I was pretty stoked about going to a mall again (mall obsession: acquired from my mother). We went to SM Megamall first, with plans to visit the Forever 21 branch there. I'd been to ones outside of the country, but this branch was relatively new so it was my first time in there.

... I was pretty disappointed. Sure, the prices were AMAZEBALLS. The items themselves, though? Bleurgh. But! I did get a pair of cute sunglasses (I really only like two things from F21- their sunglasses and their nail polish), which were incredibly cheap.

We left Forever 21 unimpressed and made our way to Mango. Most items had a 50% discount! Mango! Discount! Yay! I got a cute polo/dress-hybrid thing that I find too long. Woops, I crumpled it.

So we left and went to Bonifacio High Street (yes, we are crazy). My mother was looking for something in the furniture store Dimensione. Dimensione occupies two floors of the three in the building, while the third is either closed off... or it holds a sale.

Sales everywhere. This was retail therapy at its finest.

The most notable brands there were Aldo and Charles & Keith. There were loads of gorgeous heels there. I asked my mother to get me a pair of brown patent booties. They're really comfortable!

Christmas Party! Kind of.

Our townhouse/village had a Christmas party a few hours ago, and it was pretty boring. I won't even try to sugarcoat it. There weren't a lot (or any, really) of fun people and it was just so... slow. My sister and myself decided to go back home and, you know, have fun.

I went to the Moonlit Bazaar at the Rockwell Tent two days ago (technically two days ago, since it's now midnight), December 10, 2010, with my mom and my sister. My mother bought me some presents for my friends, and some really cute stuff for yours truly. I think this was my first bazaar (or at least, first memorable one) and I had a blast.
